WHAT WOULD RICK SANTORUM DO?
What would Rick Santorum do? Perhaps, more importantly, who would he endorse?Rick Santorum will speak to the Iowa Christian Alliance tonight with the Republican gubernatorial candidates. It seems like a perfect opportunity for the 2012 Presidential hopeful to make an endorsement.
Santorum can have his pick from the three left standing:
- Candidate Terry Branstad, who plays straight out of the Mitt Romney playbook of doing one thing as governor and saying something completely different now that he’s back on the campaign trail. Branstad even uses Romney’s former headquarters in Urbandale.
- Perennial gubernatorial candidate and businessman Bob Vander Plaats, who has been endorsed by the Iowa Family PAC and Mike Huckabee and seems to share many of the same “values” as Rick Santorum.
- Rep. Rod Roberts, whose candidacy might warrant a response similar to ‘who?’
Santorum Criticized JFK’s for Separation of Faith from Politics. In 2003, Santorum “declared that President John F. Kennedy's vow to separate his faith from his policies was wrong. That approach has caused ‘much harm in America … All of us have heard people say, “I privately am against abortion, homosexual marriage, stem cell research, cloning. But who am I to decide that it's not right for somebody else?” It sounds good. But it is the corruption of freedom of conscience.’” [Washington Post, 4/25/03]
Santorum Thinks Birth Control is “Harmful to Women.” In July of 2005, Santorum said, “I'm not a believer in birth control…I don't think it works. I think it's harmful to women.” [CN8, 7-28-05]
Santorum Blames Women Working Outside the Home on Radical Feminism. In his book, It Takes a Family, Santorum criticized feminism and its effect on families. He said, “Many women have told me, and surveys have shown, that they find it easier, more ‘professionally’ gratifying, and certainly more socially affirming, to work outside the home than to give up their careers to take care of their children. Think about that for a moment…Here, we can thank the influence of radical feminism, one of the core philosophies of the village elders.” [It Takes a Family, pg. 95]
We will have to wait and see if Rick Santorum makes an endorsement tonight, but it’s safe to assume many in the audience- possibly including the three gubernatorial candidates - will be wondering if he will.
