Terry Branstad’s own supporters: He’s wrong on health care reform
Republican gubernatorial candidate Terry Branstad put out a statement yesterday condemning the landmark legislation that will reform health care.“Given the massive scope and effect of this bill, it is likely that various provisions will be challenged in the courts. Those challenges are both timely and appropriate,” Branstad said.
Candidate Branstad seems to support using the courts to stop what the special interests couldn't: Unfortunately, his own supporters don't agree.
Sam Konchar, co-head of Students for Branstad at the University of Iowa where President Obama is going to speak on Thursday, came out in support of the bill, especially the provisions about staying on a parent's insurance until the age of 26.
From the Daily Iowan:
“When you get closer to the real world you have to think, ‘OK, health care. How am I going to take care of that?’ ” said Konchar, a UI senior, who supports the bill.
He thinks this mentality may be why many student Republicans might attend the event and support changes in health-care legislation regardless of their political ideologies.
If one young supporter of Terry Branstad disagrees with his take on health care reform, there must be many more. And if Branstad thinks he's going to win students and young voters over by opposing measures in their best interest, he's going to have a rude awakening in November.
