REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES: PUTTING DOMESTIC ABUSERS BEFORE VICTIMS

Republican candidates including State Senator Brad Zaun and State Representative Rod Roberts both voted against SF 2357, a bill that would remove firearms from domestic abusers.

Zaun is running in the Republican primary to challenge Congressman Boswell in the 3rd Congressional District. Roberts is seeking the Republican Party’s nomination for governor.

One thing is clear: if Republicans like Roberts and Zaun had it their way, they would protect the domestic abusers’ ability to use a gun before protecting the victims of domestic violence.

“How does anyone justify putting the rights of abusers before protecting the victims of domestic violence?” asked Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Michael Kiernan. “I am not sure I understand why Zaun and Roberts believe they need a promotion."

“Iowa Democrats are focused on moving this state forward, and that includes protecting Iowa’s hard-working families. If Iowa Republicans wanted to move this state forward, they should not play politics with the safety of Iowa’s families and domestic violence victims.”

SF 2357 would force those convicted of domestic abuse or who have a restraining order placed against them to relinquish their weapons during the time of the order or after they restored their rights following a conviction for abuse.
